Ko wai? programmes are based on four main themes which can be combined to suit the needs of individual organisations.  These four pillars are:

  1. BulletRangatiratanga - leadership

  2. BulletKotahitanga - unity

  3. BulletKaitiakitanga - guardianship

  4. BulletManaakitanga - nurturing.

The philosophy underpinning the programme design is grounded in “learning by doing” through which participants can directly experience the four pillars of the programme in practice, in a culturally safe environment.    According to the needs and interests of the participating organisations, the programmes can emphasise:

  1. Bulletleadership development

  2. Bulletteam building

  3. Bulletreinvigoration of teams

  4. Bulletthe Treaty  of Waitangi.

The Hakiri Programme

The centrepiece of the Hakiri (feast) Programme is the hangi and preparing to welcome guests.  Starting from scratch - some bare ground, rocks, wire, wood (but no matches) - there are opportunities for leadership, co-operation and competition in  preparations for the hakari, complete with karanga (welcome call), whaikorero (speeches) waiata (songs), perhaps a haka, and the (hopefully) beautifully cooked food.

The programmes, typically one day to two days long but longer if required, are run in a wide range of locations.  They can be based in the bush, at a beach, in a vineyard, by a stream, or on a lifestyle block!  The locations and the detailed programmes are customised each time.  The details are not shared with the participants - they become part of the delight and surprise that run through the programme.

The Waka Programme

The waka hourua (double-hull, ocean-going canoe) Te Aurere provides the vehicle (Iiterally) for a journey into Maori culture as participants learn to sail the eight tonne, 18 metre long traditional-style, migration canoe on the Hauraki Gulf.  The waka is devoid of modern sailing aids, like winches, making co-operation of the team an essential part of effective operation.  The experience includes greeting with whaikorero, waiata and haka the tangata whenua when returning to land for an evening meal.

Overnight sails include instruction in traditional wayfinding, including celestial navigation (cloud cover permitting!) and overnight watches as the waka sails continuously.  Click here to find out more about the waka.
